South Florida starting center Russel Tchewa has earned a spot on the roster for the Cameroon National Team and will compete in the FIBA World Cup 2023 Qualifiers second window.
The Cameroon Basketball Federation made the announcement on its Instagram account Sunday.
Sixteen African teams will compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers through five tournament windows over 15 months. The Qualifiers run from November 2021 to February 2023, with five African national teams earning a spot in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 that's scheduled to take place from August 25th to September 10th, 2023 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines.
Cameroon will play their opening game against Tunisia on Friday, July 1.
TCHEWA MADE AN IMPACT IN HIS SECOND SEASON WITH USF
Tchewa was a significant contributor for the Bulls in the 2021-22 season. He appeared in 29 games making 27 starts. The 7-footer averaged 25.1 minutes, 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and led the team in total rebounds (166) and offensive rebounds (61).
He scored in double-figures 11 times, including eight of the Bulls’ last 12 games and five of the last six. Tchewa averaged 11.6 points and 7.0 rebounds over the final nine games of the year. Tchewa recorded three double-doubles, including 11 points and 10 rebounds in the American Athletic Conference Tournament against UCF.
