TAMPA, Fla -- Saturday was the first of two Sling N Shoot camps held by USF this summer. USF has traditionally don't just one - but the new regime took the opportunity to get more talent on their campus.
Although there were not as many teams as the 7on7 tournament usually has, there was still a lot of quality in the teams that were there. Plant and Armwood both had two teams in the tournament - their first squads both were impressive.
Plant, led by 2014 QB Colby Brown, was impressive Saturday - leading the Panthers to an undefeated 5-0 record. Brown showed extensive leadership qualities and his mechanics were solid. Cornerback Mazzi Wilkins was also impressive - locking down receivers all day.
Armwood also had a good showing - with a 4-1 record. Their only loss came on the last game of the day in an anticipated match-up with Plant. The most impressive player, in Runningthebulls.com opinion was Hawks quarterback Noah Johnson - a 2015 prospect.
Johnson was a DB/WR last season - but is ready to take over the Armwood offense in 2013.
"It's a big transition," Johnson said. "Me playing DB and switching in with the receivers back-to-back last year - it helped me now playing quarterback because I can read defenses a lot better. I know how to play receiver - I know what they're thinking so it's a lot better for me playing quarterback."
"I felt real good today. I was real calm - in synch with my receivers," Johnson added. "I need to minimize my picks - it's the little things - my footwork and stuff sometimes wasn't right. But overall, I feel like I had a pretty good day.
There were three prospects that were already very well known coming into camp. 3-star DB from Lakeland (Fla.) Lake Gibson Kendall Gant was impressive. Besides locking down the middle of the field at Free Safety, he also played man coverage very well from the slot. Gant also got some time on offense playing receiver.
Rivals250 DB Kyle Gibson from Armwood (Fla.) was a ballhawk all day long. Gibson has incredible instincts for the ball and shows good leadership qualities.
Plant (Fla.) DB Mazzi Wilkins was on an island all afternoon - and proved he is one of the better lockdown cornerbacks in the state.
