Lakewood wide receiver Marquez Valdes started off the season with the Spartans talking to USF but something happened along the way.
The phone calls stopped and Valdes wasn't quite sure why - so when coach Willie Taggart called to offer Valdes a chance to play for the Bulls, the Rivals.com three-star wide receiver was excited.
"It made me feel really good," Valdes told Runningthebulls.com. "USF was talking to me at the beginning of the season and they kind of fell off. I wasn't sure why."
"Coach Taggart wants to turn the program around and I want to be a part of that," Valdes added. "It is close to home and an up and coming program. I feel I can make a difference."
Valdes, who played for Lakewood's 10-2 squad and had 26 catches for 444 yards and six scores.
Valdes has a short list of schools he's interested in - including Houston, Toledo, NC State, Kentucky, Minnesota and Cincinnati
Valdes has taken official visits to Toledo and Houston. He will visit NC State on Jan 11 and Kentucky on the 18th.
Valdes said he will decide next week on his final official visit, but don't get discouraged if the 6-3, 184 pound WR doesn't take an official to the other side of the bay.
"I still have one more and I might take an official visit to USF. I've already visited the school on junior day and I know what the school is about."
As far as a leaderboard, there isn't one yet for Valdes, who scored a 19 on the ACT and carries a 3.0 GPA.
I want to play in a spread offense. I want to be on the field a lot," Valdes said. "Me and my dad were talking to coach Taggart. they run the west coast offense, an NFL type offense. It's a very complex offense and give me a chance to get the ball a lot"
Valdes had one more thing to add - about playing for Lakewood coach Corey Mooore.
"Coach Moore is a great coach and he makes us very disciplined," Valdes said. "He makes sure that he gets everyone into college that he can. It's been great playing for him."
