Trey Moss: 'USF is the right school for me'

Windermere (FL) High School rising senior Trey Moss announced his commitment to USF Friday evening, making him the first member of Brian Gregory’s 2021 recruiting class.

Moss, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound three-star point guard selected the Bulls from a list of finalists that included Temple, Dayton, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M.

BullsInsider.com has had several viewings of Moss and USF gets a capable scorer and distributor from the lead guard spot. He is fast from baseline to baseline. He has good positional size, a high basketball IQ and is a capable shot maker but can be a little streaky at times.

On May 28 Moss told us that he wasn’t close to naming a top four schools but in recruiting things can, and often do, change quickly.

“I had it in my mind for a little bit,” Moss said about the decision process.” I thought about it and just knew this is where I wanted to go. I discussed with my family that I was ready to pull the trigger.”

So Moss made the big phone call earlier today.

“This morning I called Coach Gregory. I was like ‘I want to play under you and play for USF.’ He was excited. He was happy with my decision. He said ‘Let’s get to work.’ USF showed me loyalty. They showed me that they want to make me a better person off the court and on it and I knew it was the right school for me.”

Moss averaged 13.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.9 steals while leading Windermere to a 21-9 record and the Class 7A Region 2 finals.

USF assistant coach Tom Herrion led the Bulls’ recruiting efforts with Moss.

He’s been recruiting me since the ninth grade. I’ve known him forever. He told me it’s about family, loyalty and trust and he put trust and loyalty in me.

We spoke with Windermere head coach Mark Griseck following a game in Moss’ sophomore season to get his thoughts on his starting point guard.

IN HIS COACHES WORDS

He’s a great kid. He’s very coachable, he wants to be good so he’s always trying to get better. He asks questions and is just a joy to coach. His leadership at the point guard position, the thing I’m most impressed with him is that he’s always composed. He doesn’t get out of kilter, he’s always under control.

RUSS’ REACTION

I really like this pick-up for the Bulls. Landing in-stage guys is important to any program. As Moss pointed out, USF has been recruiting him since he was a freshman. The staff identified him early, and has had him and his parents on campus almost more times that I have fingers. Moss needs to get stronger but he has a good frame for adding weight.
