Meet 2021 Point Guard Trey Moss

Windermere High School class of 2021 point guard Trey Moss is starting to make a name for himself.

After an impressive freshman season, Moss continued his momentum into the travel season, with Nike Team Florida, catching the attention of the USF coaching staff. Moss was soon invited to Tampa for an unofficial visit in October and, as first reported by RunningTheBulls.com, picked up an offer from the Bulls.

In addition to his October unofficial visit to USF, Moss also attended the Bulls game against The Citadel.

“The first time on campus I visited the locker room, the team room and the lounge,” said Moss. “I stayed for a whole practice, it was good. They were vocal. Everybody was big, huge and getting after it. Everybody was vocal they all want it,” he continued before talking about his visit for The Citadel game. “It was nice it, was good. I met all of the players, I met the coaches, and they showed me around. It was good I liked it.

What was head coach Brian Gregory’s message to the young point guard?

“Just keep getting better each day. Be in the gym each day getting better, staying good in the classroom and keep getting better as a man and on the basketball court,” Moss said.

Thursday RTB made the trip to Windermere to watch the sophomore in action and came away impressed with his quickness – both his feet and hands – poise and willingness to defend. Unofficially Moss finished with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds in about 18 minutes of playing time in a lopsided win over Ocoee.

“I just try to get the whole team involved,” Moss said about his role with the team. “Get everybody going, get everybody together playing hard and aggressive.”

This is just the second season for Windermere High School basketball and they are hoping to build off of their successful debut season which, despite having no seniors, Windermere finished third in Class 8A District 5.

“It’s going good,” Moss said of the Wolverines season thus far. “Everybody is getting along, everybody is doing well, and everybody is going hard, pushing each other, getting after it and being tough.”

Moss, who listed himself at 6-foot-3, 160-pounds, talked about his defensive activity.

“I try my hardest on D,” said Moss. “Last year I had some mishaps on defense but now I’m trying to get after it. That’s one of my weaknesses that I’m trying to work on. I’m trying hard to get better at it.”

In addition to his USF offer, Moss also holds offers from Florida Atlantic, Massachusetts, and Florida Gulf Coast with interest coming from Iowa State and UCF.

We asked Windermere Head Coach Mark Griseck, who entered the season with 307 career wins and a 67 percent career winning percentage, for his thoughts on Moss.

IN THE WORDS OF HIS COACH

He’s a great kid. He’s very coach-able, he wants to be good. He asks questions and he’s always trying to get better. He’s just a joy to coach. The thing I’m most impressed with, as a young kid, is he’s always composed. He never gets out of kilter. He’s just always kind of in control. That’s kind of rare for a young guy but he played 26 games last year so although he’s still a sophomore he has a lot of experience. He’s figuring out times when he needs to score and times when Dakota (Rivers, who signed with FGCU) has a mismatch and he needs to get the ball. That’s the next step for him, to really think the game, at the point guard position.

RTB REACTION

This was our first in-person look at Moss and he definitely left us wanting to see much more of him. He has a very good feel for the game, understands how to advance the ball quickly with two-to-three dribbles or one quick advance pass, a perimeter shot that keeps the defense honest and is a good on-ball and help defender. While he definitely needs to get stronger there is plenty of time for that since he is just a sophomore. Moss was a very good early offer for USF.
