Picking the right fit is really important to Nate Godwin. That is what led him to de-commit from Minnesota in late December and eventually verbally commit to the USF.
"Coach (Willie_ Taggart reached out to me right after he got hired," said the three-star DB from Freedom High School in Tampa, FL. "I felt more comfortable picking USF"
Godwin will be taking his official visit to USF on Saturday, January 10th, a visit that he is has been looking forward to.
"[I'm excited] just to see everything, the facilities and all that, getting to know the players and all that," Godwin said. "I live in the city so I know a lot about it [USF]."
A big factor in Godwin's decision to de-commit from Minnesota to go to USF was an early opportunity to play.
"Playing time was a real factor," said Godwin. "I can come right away and make an impact for USF, quicker than with Minnesota where I would've most likely had to redshirt a year."
Godwin had a breakout senior season with Freedom High School. The 6-foot defensive back had 47 tackles, three interceptions and six pass breakups for the Patriots.
It seemed USF had missed out on Godwin after the DB verbally committed to Minnesota in October. The Bulls got back into the mix after Willie Taggart was hired as USF's new head coach, prompting Godwin to contemplate "decisions, decisions" on his twitter account.
"I built a relationship with both those guys and Coach Scott at USF, he is still there. It has been real fun."
If Godwin does indeed sign with the Bulls, he will be playing for newly hired defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan.
"I haven't really gotten to talk to him," Godwin said. "Anyone who came from the NFL is a good hire, he has good connections with the NFL, knows what it takes to get to the NFL and runs a pro-style system."
Godwin described the offseason as "enjoyable". The Freedom High School DB says that has been going "to USF and hang out with Coach Taggart."
He is looking forward to signing with the Bulls because; "Once I sign, I can actually get a workout from South Florida."
Godwin will be with the Bulls for spring practices and has yet to decide if he will enroll early to USF after graduating from Freedom High School in December.
