Nations No. 15 PG Prospect Sets Visit

The recruitment of Denis Clemente, the nation’s No. 15 senior point guard prospect according to Rivals.com, will include a trip to Tampa. The 6-foot-1, 165-pounder from Calusa Prep in Miami will visit USF the weekend of Sept. 28, his AAU coach Art Alvarez confirmed.

“He’ll be in Tampa that weekend and South Florida will get a legitimate shot at recruiting him,” said Alvarez, the former coach at Miami Christian High who now leads the Florida Tropics. “I’ve worked with Greg Gary before. He was instrumental in recruiting Guillermo Diaz to Miami and I have a lot of respect for Greg. I’ve also been highly impressed with coach (Robert) McCullum, who just has a lot of integrity.”
Clemente, a Nike All-American, currently holds offers from Cincinnati, Miami, Arkansas and Ohio State and will visit each during the next few weeks. As a junior, Clemente was the Class 1A Player of the Year and one of six finalists for Mr. Basketball. He led the state in scoring at 33.5 points per game and also averaged nine assists. Clemente, a native Puerto Rican, is the No. 90 player in the Rivals150, but has appeared as high as 40 in some national rankings.
His camp performances this summer have only upped his stock in the eyes of recruiters. During the Peach Jam, a summer tournament featuring many of the top players in the nation, Clemente led all point guards in scoring average at 32.5 points per game.
McCullum and Gary will be in Miami this week to meet with both Clemente and Alvarez and discuss a possible future with the Bulls. Clemente’s quickness and superior ball-handling skills make him an intriguing prospect.
“I’ve coached a lot of great players, but I’ve never had a guard as quick as him,” Alvarez said. “He can run from end line to end line in 3.7 seconds. If there is a quicker player out there, I’ve yet to see him.”
