The USF Bulls men's basketball team lost their first game of the season to 5th ranked Oklahoma State on Monday to drop their overall record to 4-1. They return to action as they take on Detroit Mercy in another key non-conference game (game begins at 7 PM).

The Bulls got beaten both in the paint during the loss to Oklahoma State and mistakes doomed them from the start. Against Detroit, they will need to correct those mistakes and come out strong against a team that has some skill players.

Detroit Juwan Howard Jr., the son of NBA veteran and member of the Fab 5 Juwan Howard. Howard Jr., the 6'6" 210 lb. redshirt junior forward leads teh way with 18.7 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 2.9 APG, and has added 6 blocks and 3 steals this season. He will be a player to watch inside the paint with his ability to both score and play defense. Look for Victor Rudd to match-up with him throughout the game. Redshirt sophomore guard Carlton Brundidge (6'3" 202 lbs.) is a guard with size that is averaging 11.3 PPG (shooting 34% from 3-point range) and averages 3.6 RPG and has 7 steals. Corey Allen Jr. and Anthony Collins will have to make sure he doesn't get his shot going during the game.

Senior forward Evan Bruinsma (6'8" 214 lbs.) is averaging 10 PPG, 7.7 RPG, and has 9 steals and 5 blocks, providing another strong match-up in the game against the Bulls front court. Senior center Ugochukwu Njoku (6'10" 220 lbs.) is averaging 4.4 PPG, 7.4 RGP, and has 8 steals and 15 blocks. He will be matched up against star freshman John Egbunu who is coming off of his best game as a freshman where he had 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Egbunu will have to deal with a strong shot blocker, but should have enough skill inside.

Off the bench is sophomore guard Anton Wilson (6'5" 191 lbs.) who is averaging 8.3 PPG, 1.9 RPG, and has 4 blocks and 5 steals, giving Detroit another skilled shooter from the perimeter. Freshman guard Jarod Williams (6'2" 168 lbs.) is averaging 8.1 PPG, 2 APG, and 2.3 RPG and fellow freshman Matthew Grant (6'1" 165 lbs.) is averaging 9.7 PPG, 1.1 RPG, 2 APG, and has 7 steals.

This is the game the Bulls should win. Detroit has plenty of size inside and a dynamic wing player in Juwan Howard Jr. that will challenge the Bulls inside, but the skill and ability of the USF big men (Egbunu, Perry, Rudd, and LeDay) should prove to be more than enough for Detroit. USF made a lot of mistakes against Oklahoma State but they also learned a lot and had a lot of positives from the game. From Egbunu to Allen, this team has the skills needed to get right back into the win column. Look for a close game early as both sides battle through the Thanksgiving hangover, but for the Bulls to pull ahead late and seal the deal.
