Detroit CB commits to Pitt

Pitt landed another recruit on Wednesday when Detroit (Mich.) Martin Luther King cornerback Avonte Maddox pulled the trigger for the Panthers.

"I like how it's set up down there," Maddox told Panther-Lair.com. "I like the environment and how the facilities are and how the campus is; I could really get used to it. It just seems like it's the right fit for me."

Maddox got an offer from Pitt after the Panthers' first prospect camp two weeks ago, and once the coaches told him they were offering, he started thinking about a future at Pitt.

"It didn't take long to sink in; I was like, 'This is one of my favorite places,' so I went home to talk to my family about it and I realized it about a few days ago. I was like, 'It's time for me to get this done.'"

The prospect camp also gave Maddox, 5'9" 154, a chance to work directly with defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Matt House. Maddox was already familiar with House since he is Maddox's main contact at Pitt, but at the camp, the two worked one-on-one through drills, and that shed some light on House's coaching style.

"I have a nice relationship with Coach House," Maddox said. "He's a good guy and he's very energetic. He's hyped up, and that's what I like. He pushed me to go hard and I like that. I want to work hard and Coach House liked that."

Maddox added that House liked a few things about his game.

"He was talking about how long I can stay in my back-pedal while a receiver is coming at my full-speed, and he said that was pretty impressive," Maddox said. "He said likes my speed and mostly my hard work.

"I like to work hard; that's a big thing for me. My uncle and my dad tell me every day: everything comes when you put in hard work. And everything has been coming good since I've been putting in hard work. It's exciting."

In addition to Pitt, Maddox held offers from Cincinnati, Ohio, Toledo, Ball State, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. He is Pitt's seventh recruit in the class of 2014 and the third to announce for the Panthers on Wednesday. Bethel Park offensive lineman Mike Grimm and West Catholic safety Patrick Amara also announced their commitments Wednesday, joining Shady Side Academy athlete Dennis Briggs, Ohio quarterback Adam Bertke, New York safety Jalen Williams, and Michigan offensive lineman Connor Hayes.
