TAMPA - The quarterback battle between Matt Floyd and Bobby Eveld heated up last Saturday in the spring game as both signal callers had success and mistakes.

However, Floyd is the only one of the three QB's who threw passes in the spring game, to complete a touchdown pass. In fact, the 6-foot-1, 206 pound redshirt sophomore threw two touchdown passes - both to Andre Davis

The first, an 85-yard slant pass on the first play from scrimmage for the White team, was planned all along.

"We knew we were going to go for a touchdown on the first play," Floyd said after the 14-11 win by the White squad. "It just went extremely well. The safety came up and we were able to squeeze it right through the middle."

Floyd would throw another TD to Davis, to end the half, on a two-yard fade pattern, giving the White squad a 14-3 lead at the half.

"It's great to have a guy (Davis) that can go up there and catch the ball," Floyd said. "He makes plays. That's what he's good at doing."

Floyd, and his counter-part on the Green squad - Bobby Eveld - had a new offense to learn this spring. He felt the offense progressed from the first workout to the final play.

"I think myself, and everyone on the offense has done a great job of coming from day one - where we didn't have any idea what we were doing, to today (Saturday)," said Floyd. "You can run the basic plays, but the 15 practices just did an awesome job."

Floyd was less complimentary of his inability to secure the football at times.

"I turned the ball over on the center snap a few times," Floyd said. "I've got to work on that. That's something that will get us beat."

Overall, Floyd had better numbers than Eveld, finishing the spring game 9-of-16 for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

Both Floyd and Eveld were playing for the first time since being injured against the Miami Hurricanes November 17 of last year.
