In need of depth and experience at the point guard position, USF bolstered its backcourt on Saturday night with a verbal commitment from a Junior College transfer who it hopes can help immediately.

Corey Allen, Jr., a 6-foot-1 point guard who averaged 21.1 points and 4.2 assists for Mt. San Antonio College (CA) last season, arrived in Tampa Friday evening with his parents to begin an official visit with the Bulls.

To say the visit got off to a great start may be an understatement.

"I felt comfortable the moment I got off the plane," said Allen. "Coach Heath offered me at dinner Saturday night and told me he would take a commitment whenever I was ready.

"I told him I was ready now. I knew this was the place for me because of the feeling I got with the coaching staff, the academic advisor and from playing ball with the team."

One of the reasons for the high comfort level was the relationship between Bulls assistant coach Steve Roccaforte and Allen's Mt. San Antonio College head coach Chris Freeman.

"Coach Rocc and my coach talked last year and then it stopped for a while," said Allen. "Then when our season ended there was a lot of talk with coach Rocc and my coach."

With South Florida in need of an experienced ball handler and scorer, Allen, the SoCal Junior College Player of The Year, knew time was of the essence.

"Coach said they need someone else that could score and handle the ball," said Allen. "They plan to run some three-guard fronts."

Before the addition of Allen, the Bulls were faced with relying on two true freshmen to back up point guard Anthony Collins who average 30 minutes per game last season.

Adding Allen now brings the Bulls total number of incoming players to seven. He joins Dre'Kalo Clayton, Drew Davis, John Egbunu, Josh Heath, Chris Perry and Byron Zeigler. Allen chose USF over UTEP, Pittsburgh, Oregon State, West Virginia, Murray State and Ole Miss.

He will enroll at USF in June to begin his final two years of eligibility.
