TAMPA -- Led by sophomore QB Matt Floyd and junior WR Andre Davis, the white team, coached by Ron Cooper out-dueled the Green team 14-11 to win the 2013 USF Spring game.

Davis caught the first pass Floyd threw and took it 85 yards for a score to give the White a lead it would never relinquish. In fact, the lead wasn't even challenged until six second remaining in the game.

Just to be safe, however, Floyd would go to Davis again - this time a 2-yard jump ball in the end zone just before the end of the first half.

Davis caught it despite being double-covered. He had been interfered with earlier on the same play.

In a game that featured virtually no running game to speak of, both teams appeared to be struggling getting into a rhythm.

"We didn't do a lot of the things we would normally do," said head coach Willie Taggart. "We've got a lot of work to do from this point forward."

Floyd finished the game 9-of-16 for 208 yards and two scores. He out-dueled Sr. QB Bobby Eveld, who struggled, going 14-of-24 for 143 yards with one interception.

Bobby Eveld did score with six seconds left and punched in a two-point conversion.

Willie Davis led the all rushers with 39 yards net rushing. Marcus Shaw had 33 yards for the white team.

Neither team mounted much of a running game, combining for a net total of 31 yards on the ground (sacks come off the rushing totals in college), which Taggart attributed to the running backs rushing things just a bit.

"The holes were there," Taggart said. "The offensive line did a great job of opening holes and holding their blocks. We just weren't patient enough and didn't find the holes."

Andre Davis led all receivers with three catches for 90 yards and two scores. Clinton Jones had two for 45 and Deonte Welch added two for 40 for the White team. Derric Hopkins led the Green team with four catches for 60 yards, including a 31-yard catch that set up the final score of the game. Jake Carlton had four catches for 28 yards while Willie Davis had three for 19.

Defensively, the White team stifled the Green until the final drive of the day. Elkino Watson, DeDe Lattimore and Reshard Cliett led the way with five tackles each. Cliett added an interception.

News and Notes

Over 90 recruits were on hand, including recent Florida commit Benjamin Knox - who told Runningthebulls.com that his verbal to the Gators remains, but he's "pretty open" ... Rivals.com three-star LB Greg Miclisse said he's narrowed down his "top schools yesterday." USF is on the list. "I met the head coach (Taggart) and the coaching staff today. I'm excited to see the spring game."

Announced attendance was 4,606.... No significant injuries to report... Taggart said the officials called personal fouls on what appeared to be clean hits by the defense because "The rule has changed and they (the players) better get ready for it. It's not like it's been in the past."
