Breaking down the Tight Ends

SOCIAL: Follow on Twitter | Friend on Facebook

The tight end position was a bright spot in a dark 2012 season for USF. Looking forward, the tight end position should see heavy use in Willie Taggart's west coast offense. Let's take a look at what the Bulls have at the tight end position..

Returning
Sean Price
6-foot-3 | 240 | Fr. | North Marion (Citra, Fla.)
The Buzz: After being overlooked for the spring and most of the offseason, Price had a breakout year in 2012. Starting the year off the depth chart, behind Andreas Shields and Mike McFarland, Price finally broke through in USF's seventh game of the year against Louisville, catching three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. The North Marion high school product caught at least three passes in the final six games of the year and quickly became a fan favorite. Going into next year, Price should be the one who gets the starting nod. Price showed good hands and a great ability to catch the ball in traffic in 2012, a valuable tool for any quarterback.

Jackson Cannon

6-foot-3 | 224| Fr.| Land O'Lakes (Land O'Lakes, Fla.)
The Buzz: Cannon did not play in a single game in 2012. The Land O' Lakes product has an opportunity with the new coaching staff to attempt to work himself onto the depth chart for 2013. Cannon, a linebacker in high school, registered 356 tackles, 38.5 sacks, five INTs and two blocked punts in his career at Land O' Lakes high school.

Jake Carlton

6-foot-3 | 233 | R-So.| Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton, Fla.)
The Buzz: A special teams player in 2012, Carlton was one of the lesser known athletes who played in 10 games last year. Carlton has seen little playing time in his three year career with the Bulls. The Bradenton native redshirted in 2010 and registered just one tackle in 2011 before returning one kick in 2012. Going forward, it is unclear what role could materialize for Carlton. Expect that the new coaching staff will reevaluate at every position, giving Carlton an opportunity to play his way into more playing time.
Committed - Not Signed
Auggie Sanchez

6-foot-2 | 215 | LB/ATH | Northeast (St. Petersburg, Fla.)
The Buzz: Sanchez is one of the most recent commits to USF, verbally announcing his intent on January 22nd. A linebacker in high school, Sanchez was told that he would have to move to the offensive side of the ball to the TE/H-Back/FB position if he accepted an offer from the Bulls. Sanchez took time to consider, but eventually did decide to play for USF. Ironically, Sanchez started his football career in high school as - a tight end. A legacy, Sanchez's brother Armando played three years for USF mainly as a special teams player. The Rivals.com two-star athlete showed he had good hands his senior year with Northeast high school, hauling in two interceptions. Look for the multi-talented Sanchez to play TE and H-back/Fullback for Taggart's offense.

Targeting, not committed
Travis Johnson

6-foot-3 | 231 | TE-WR | Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.)
The Buzz: One of the highest rated uncommitted players left, Johnson is making a lot of suitor waiting. The Jesuit high school product has received 37 total offers and has made visits to Cincinnati and Missouri. Johnson is the 11th ranked tight end nationally and 74th ranked player in the state of Florida by Rivals.com. A Rivals.com three-star player, Johnson will take his official visit to USF on January 25th. The Tampa native cancelled his official visit to Rutgers this weekend to make the trip to USF. Johnson could be the cherry on the sundae that is Willie Taggart's 2013 recruiting class if the coach can convince the recruit to come to Tampa. Johnson's speed and good hands could make him an immediate contributor for the Bulls on the football field and, maybe, on the basketball court.

Schools in the Mix: - Missouri, Rutgers, USF, Cincinnati, Miami
