Taggart Continues to fill staff

TAMPA - The USF has hired Robert Weiner to serve as wide receivers coach, head coach Willie Taggart announced on Sunday. Weiner joins the USF staff after serving as the head coach at Plant High School in Tampa for nine seasons.

A 1983 Tampa Jesuit graduate, Weiner compiled a 102-19 record at Plant, which included eight playoff berths, four state titles and five state finals appearances. The Panthers currently hold a Hillsborough County-best streak of eight-straight district titles. As a result of his success, Weiner was honored by serving as the 'East' head coach in the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, an annual all-star game that features some of the nation's top prep players.

Prior to his tenure at Plant, Weiner served as an assistant coach at Jesuit for 15 seasons and one year at Crystal River.

Reaction to the hire from around the state was positive.

Seffner Armwood head coach Sean Callahan called Weiner "the ultimate competitor."

"It's a great hire," Callahan said. "He knows the area and has great contacts with coaches. He's a hard worker and will be a tremendous asset to coach Taggart's staff."

Armwood and Plant are arguably the two most successful programs in Tampa over the last 10 years. The two schools annually battled for a playoff spot when in the same classification - and made four straight appearances in the 4A (now 6A) state title game (2003-2005 Armwood, 2006 - Plant).

Callahan's son is an assistant at UCF

Josh Corey's Fletcher Senators lost to Plant in 2011 in the state semi-finals.

"Bob (Weiner) is a great ambassador for high school football," Corey said. "He is an incredible motivator and his teams are as well prepared as any that I have ever coached against."

Hector to take official visit to USF

Verbal commitment Bruce Hector cancelled plans to visit Buffalo.

Hector will take his official on the campus Jan. 11-13.

The 6-2, 270 pd offensive lineman from Tampa Robinson committed to USF in June of 2012, but has considered other options. He has not decommitted as of this publishing - and it looks like he won't.

Boeheim, Heath not pleased with offense.

Neither basketball head coach for either squad was pleased with Sunday's offensive output in a 55-44 Syracuse win over USF Sunday.

Legendary Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim called Sunday's win 'awful.' but the rebounding advantage (45-26) a 'tribute' to his team.

"That's a tribute to the fact we can't make a shot," Boeheim said. "I've never seen a worse offensive performance. I can't remember. Three-on-one fast breaks, lay-ups. Awful." Heath was frustrated with the inability to get an offensive rebound - or so it seemed. Syracuse got 19 offensive rebounds to USF's 6.

"We didn't shoot well, but they didn't shoot well either and I told our team, we beat them in every percentage offensive area," Heath said. "But the offensive rebounds was just ridiculous."
