Three-star safety picks up Army offer

Warning to receivers and ball carriers, please do not let the soft spoken demeanor of Fairfield (Calif.) Vanden safety Deone Bucannon fool you when it comes to the hammer he brings onto the field.

The 6-foot-2, 180 pounder is an extremely athletic defender, but an equally vicious hitter from his safety spot.

So it comes as no surprise that two of Bucannon's favorite players are also knockout artist themselves. "I watch a lot of tape and I watch Taylor Mays (USC) and Troy Polamalu (Pittsburgh Steelers)," shares Bucannon who currently holds five offers. "They both can bring it and that's how I play."

With offers from Washington State, Cal-Poly, Nevada, San Diego State and most recently the Black Knights of Army, Bucannon is excited about his recruiting thus far.
"He got an offer in the mail today from Army and he was excited about it," shared Vanden High School Head Coach LeVon Haynes on Saturday. "They had come by in the spring to look at another kid and liked his (Bucannon) film and called him and said that they loved what they saw. This now makes five for him so far. It's been busy summer for him but he's been doing well to prepare for the upcoming season. He will be taking his first visit in September."

"Army offered about 3 days ago," confirms the 3-star safety, who is being recruiting by Army offensive coordinator, Ian Shields. "At first Coach Shields called my mom and then I talked to them a little bit. A couple days later I received my offer in the mail. He's a real cool person and spent time talking about the West Point education. He was saying how interested in me they were and I told him I was interested in Army."

Uncharacteristic of most football recruits, who typically have a secondary sport that is either track, basketball or baseball, Bucannon enjoys making his rounds on the golf course. He has been a member of the schools varsity golf team since his freshman year.

On the gridiron, he finished last season with 140 tackles and 3 interceptions, that earned him the city's Defensive Player of the Year, as well as being named All-League, All-Region and All-CIF.

Bucannon, who runs a 4.55 forty is being recruited strictly as a safety

This summer he camped at California, Arizona State, Washington, San Jose State, Oregon and attended Sacramento State's team camp and plans on taking his first official visit on September 5th to Washington State.

GoBlackKnights.com will continue to follow Bucannon recruiting process throughout the balance of the summer and into his senior season.
