USF hits the road for the first time for the 2014-14 as they look to improve to 3-0 on the year as they take on Bowling Green. The Falcons of the Mid-American Conference are 1-0 on the year, coming off of a 102 to 49 victory over Earlham in their season opener.
Bowling Green went just 13-19 (7-9) last season, but were 11-5 at home. The Bulls beat the Falcons is a thrilling triple overtime game in the Sunday, the Bulls winning 87 to 84.
In the win over the Falcons last season, Victor Rudd had 29 points to lead all scorers. Rudd, who has been slow to start games, leads the team in points per game with 18.5 over the last two. The other star from last year's win was Martino Brock who had 18 points in the victory. He is averaging 9 points per game to start the season (has started both games) and leads the team with 7 steals.
Bowling Green, who is replacing their top two scorers from last season, does have size and depth that will be able to contend with the Bulls inside. Junior guard/forward Chauncey Orr (6'4" 201 lbs.) had 14 points and 2 rebounds in the opening win. He averaged 7.5 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and had 33 steals last season. Sophomore forward Spencer Parker (6'7" 202 lbs.) had 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in the opener. He had 24 points total last season in 15 games as a reserve. Junior forward Richaun Holmes (6'8" 232 lbs.) who had 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks in the win. He averaged 6.5 PPG, 5 RPG, and led the team with 73 blocks last year, making him a player to watch in the lower post.
Junior guard Jehvon Clarke (6'1" 181 lbs.) had 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 8 assists in the opening with after averaging 3.4 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and adding 19 steals off the bench last year. He'll be the key point guard for the Bulls to watch in the game. Corey Allen Jr. or Anthony Collins (if he plays) will have to keep him covered during the game and not allow him to move the offense. Junior guard Anthony Henderson (6'1" 178 lbs.) had 15 points (2 of 5 from 3-point range) along with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. He averaged 3.5 PPG and 2.1 RPG last season, but scored 9 points against USF. It will be up to Brock and others to guard him on the wing and not allow him to get clean looks.
This game is going to be a real test for the young Bulls. For many, it will be their first collegiate road game and will be a new environment for them to deal with on the road. Bowling Green is also a real test with their size in the paint. Against Bethune Cookman, the Bulls dominated inside against a lineup that had 4 guards start the game. With Bowling Green, they have the size inside the paint that will contest John Egbunu and Chris Perry on both ends of the court. This game will probably be fairly close throughout most of the contest, but look for the Bulls to take the lead down the stretch and out-last the Falcons in route to their 3rd win of the season.
