USF wraps day 11
Tampa-USF football held their second scrimmage of the 2013 spring season today at the Frank Morsani Football Complex. This was the final scrimmage that the Bulls will play in before the Spring game on April 13th.
After the first scrimmage, the coaching staff got a better idea for who was distancing themselves from the rest. Today was another opportunity for those players to continue their progress.
"I think we have guys that are capable of making plays on both sides of the ball." Willie Taggart said. "I told the team that's what we're looking for. We're getting more comfortable with what we're doing now and it's time to execute and make plays that we're capable of making."
One of the takeaways from the first scrimmage was that the offense lacked consistency. Taggart said that he expected to see some improvement there as well.
"We're getting better. By those guys getting better we've been having better practices," he said.
Before the scrimmage started, the defensive backs and receivers worked on 1-on-1 drills as well as the tip drill. Antonio Hughes picked up an INT during the drill, which made DB's coach Ron Cooper extremely happy. After the INT, Cooper emphatically announced to everyone around him, "that's the first one of the day!"
Following the individual drills, the team did some quick 7-on-7 work before finally beginning the scrimmage.
The first team offense, starting from left-to-right on the offensive line was Darrell Williams, Brynjar Gudmundsson, Austin Reiter, Thor Joziak, and Mak Djulbegovic. Bobby Eveld was the first team quarterback, and he worked with Marcus Shaw, Andre Davis, Jordan Duval, and Derrick Hopkins at the skill positions. Sean Price and Mike McFarland split time at tight end.
Chuck Bresnahan's defensive line started with Tevin Mims, Elkino Watson, Luke Sager, and Julius Forte in the trenches. The first team linebackers were Zack Bullock, Reshard Cliett, and Ruben Garcia. Brandon Salinas, Josh Brown, Jaquez Jenkins, and Mark Joyce started off in the secondary.
The team worked on punt coverage as well. Mattias Ciabatti was the punter, and Andre Davis was the returner. It was interesting during this drill, because special teams coach Stu Holt called for Deonte Welch, but didn't get him. Apprently Welch was not there today. I will try and find out what happened on Tuesday.
While the media was allowed at practice, Michael Pierre, who was the second team running back, scored a long rushing touchdown of 25-30 yards. That was the only scoring while I was there.
USF Football hosted a coaching clinic this weekend as well. Robert Weiner, who at one time accepted a position USF's staff was there representing Plant High School. In addition to Weiner, Manatee High, Countryside High, Jesuit High, and a few more had coaches in attendance.
A little bit of injury news to report as well. Punter Chris Veron was back in a walking boot after being out of it earlier this week. Max Lang now has a cast on his left wrist, which has caused him to be sidelined. D'Vario Montgomery was questionable for practice today, and he was out there, however he was limited.
