August 24, 2012USF's depth in the front court took a hit Friday when the school announced center Waverly Austin, one of the top junior college players in the country in the 2012, won't be eligible to play for USF in the upcoming season.
The school wouldn't elaborate on the reason for ineligibility, but Austin didn't make it into USF because of academics after signing with the school in 2010.
Austin, 6-foot-11, 270-pounds, was a good bet to start this season in replacement of Augustus Gilchrist, who graduated. Now the Bulls will have to rely on seniors Toarlyn Fitzpatrick (6-8, 245) and Kore White (6-8, 241), a graduate transfer. The Bulls will also have redshirt freshman Jordan (7-3, 335) Omogbehin available, but the huge Nigerian isn't likely to be a major contributor.
USF is coming off its best season in recent memory, earning a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 20 years. The Bulls lost in the round of 32 to Ohio.
