April 9, 2011Here's a quick rundown of what transpired during Saturday's scrimmage.
-On the surface, the offense appeared to approve from the spring game, but Holtz said afterward he doesn't like where the wide receivers are, saying they are basically at the same point as they were all last year.
-Redshirt freshman Deonte Welch continues to build on his strong spring, catching 5 passes for 107 yards, including a highlight reel, over-the-shoulder play on a deep ball from Bobby Eveld. Terrence Mitchell (4 catches, 30 yards) and Evan Landi (3 catches, 50 yards) also had solid showings.
-Defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said he liked how the defense played, especially covering the deep ball, an area of struggle during the spring game. Kayvon Webster intercepted Matt Floyd and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown, and Mark Joyce and Curtis Weatherspoon each had interceptions. Other standouts included walk-on CB Ernie Tabuteau and DE Claude Davis.
-The quarterbacks fared better today than in the spring game: B.J. Daniels was 8-for-19 for 120 yards, Eveld was 16-of-30 for 190, and Floyd, despite throwing two interceptions on deep balls, was 10-of-13 for 79.
-Darrell Scott, originally expected to miss the game and possibly more time with a pulled muscle suffered in his leg last week, played and played well, rushing for 60 yards, including a 30-yard burst through the middle. Demetris Murray cemented his position as the No. 1 RB on the depth chart with 75 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown.
-There appeared to be no serious injuries. As expected, WR Lindsey Lamar (shoulder), WR A.J. Love (ACL recovery), and RB Marcus Shaw (broken thumb) didn't participate because of injury.
